Week 3: Auburn @ Bucs
Knights, "October weather" chill Bucs
BELVIDERE – Two red zone missed opportunities were the true difference in the game as the Auburn Knights (1-2) went on to defeat the Belvidere Bucs (1-2) at Funderburg Stadium in Friday NIC-10 action in Belvidere, 28-13.
In sophomore action, Auburn won 44-26.
For the third straight week, weather was a part of the backdrop, as a persistent mist turned to rain along with a 46 degree temp that was more in line for late October than just the second full week of September.
The BHS student section chose "Camo" as its theme, while Auburn's student section wore red, white and blue in remembrance of September 11th, observed the day before.
The Bucs offense that was so overpowering from the previous week was in camo, in a way, (when Belvidere blasted Jefferson 41-0). But Auburn, despite its 0-2 start, was not Jefferson and the Bucs knew it. Auburn was picked to be second at the end of the season.
Auburn led at half time, 13-0.
Despite a 1-2 record, Belvidere has a shot at finishing the season with a respectable record and future weeks will tell all. Next is Honenegah, then Harlem. Will "David" defeat two "Goliaths"?
The NIC-10 has had plenty of upsets and surprises, with an interesting shake-up. There are three remaining undefeated teams: Harlem, Hononegah and Guilford.
Harlem (3-0) annointed their new turf by handily beating perrenial powerhouse Boylan (1-2), 54-13.
Hononegah (3-0) outlasted Belvidere North (2-1), 35-28, while Guilford (3-0) KO'd Rockford East (0-3) 42-20.
Freeport (1-2) gained their first victory by pounding Jefferson (0-3), 42-17.
