Week 7: @ Freeport
Bucs win manic marathon victory over Pretzels
The stats reveal the manic pace of the game: 14 total touchdowns, 99 points scored by both teams – including 48 in the fourth quarter alone. 7 TDs were chalked up in that fourth quarter.
With 48 seconds remaining, the Freeport Pretzels scored with a 34-yard TD run by Vance McShane with to pull ahead, 45-41. Belvidere’s shot for a potential playoff spot was on the line.
That’s when Belvidere quarterback Colton Bahling engineered a 49 yard game-sealing drive, capped off by an 8-yard toss to Dayquan Coleman with just 6 seconds left to put the Bucs up for good. But the scoring wasn’t complete. On the game’s last play, Freeport used a hook-and-ladder play that ended in a fumble recovery by Belvidere’s Justin Robles, who dashed in for the final touchdown. Belvidere beat the Freeport Pretzels in a Week 7 NIC-10 varsity football thriller, 54-45.
Belvidere climbs to 3-4 on the season, needing to win its last two games for playoff consideration. They host the Rockford East E-Rabs next Friday at Funderburg Stadium. The Pretzels ended their 2014 playoff hopes and fall to 2-5.
In other NIC-10 varsity action, Belvidere North won over Rockford East (56-12), Hononegah beat Harlem (49-14), Auburn edged Guilford (24-21) and Boylan defeated Rockford Jefferson, 49-13. Hononegah and North are atop the conference with 6-1 records.
In sophomore action, Belvidere beat Freeport, 34-6. Freeport did not have a freshman squad, so no Frosh game was played.
